| First Features at Shawano Speedway! |
| By Bert Lehman |
Shawano, WI (April 24, 2004) - It was a night of firsts at the Shawano Speedway, as A.J. Diemel won his first WISSOTA Late Model feature at the Speedway and Julie McDermid won her first IMCA Modified feature at the Speedway. Rod Snellenberger won the IMCA Stock Car feature, while Jeff Curtin won the Limited Late Model feature.
In the IMCA Modified feature, Julie McDermid jumped out to the early lead over Craig Bartz, Jeremy Hedrick, Jerry Wilinski and Jerry Muenster. By the third lap, McDermid and Bartz began a side-by-side battle, with McDermid on the outside and Bartz on the inside. This continued for three laps, when Bartz was finally able to make the inside groove stick, making the pass for the lead. Bartz stayed in the lead for only two laps, before he was forced to the pits with no fuel pressure. This gave the lead back to McDermid, with Hedrick, Wilinski, Jay Schraufnagel, and Muenster following.
As McDermid continued to lead, Schraufnagel grabbed the third spot from Wilinski. Those two battle back and fourth for the next few laps, while Hedrick was beginning to challenge for the lead. Hedrick was right on McDermid’s rear bumper until the white flag waved, when he ducked underneath McDermid entering turn one. McDermid battled back, as the two raced side-by-side down the backstretch. Hedrick pulled out front, and crossed the finish line ahead of McDermid, Wilinski, Schraufnagel and Muenster. Hedrick did not follow track procedures for going to the scale and the claim area after the race and was disqualified. This gave the win to McDermid, her first at the Shawano Speedway.
